When driving through these weather changes, knowing how to maintain visibility is essential for keeping yourself and other road users safe.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A new survey of 2,000 UK drivers, commissioned by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempcover.com\/temporary-car-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.tempcover.com\/temporary-car-insurance&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1772527080995000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1xzmN0yYsu_vGmHuK-9B9P\">temporary\u00a0<span class=\"il\">car<\/span>\u00a0insurance<\/a>\u00a0experts Tempcover, shows that motorists often overestimate their knowledge of safe driving rules in foggy conditions.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">While 83% of <a href=\"https:\/\/autoscommunity.com\/2025\/01\/21\/drivers-warned-against-common-mattress-mistake\/\">drivers<\/a> say they are confident they know how to use their fog lights, more than half (51%) cannot correctly identify the visibility threshold at which they should be used. <a href=\"https:\/\/autoscommunity.com\/2023\/04\/04\/motorists-warned-not-to-bolt-at-highway-code-changes\/\">The Highway Code<\/a> states fog lights should only be switched on when visibility <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/the-highway-code\/driving-in-adverse-weather-conditions-226-to-237\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">falls below 100 metres,<\/a>\u00a0yet 30% of drivers selected a different distance and more than one in five (21%) admitted they weren\u2019t sure at all.<\/p>\n<h5 dir=\"ltr\"><br \/>Driver Knowledge Gaps in Foggy Conditions<\/h5>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Nearly one in five drivers (17%) believe full-beam headlights should be used when visibility drops below 100 metres, with 18% incorrectly thinking that this improves visibility. In reality, fog reflects the light back towards the driver, meaning high-beam headlights can actually reduce visibility and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rac.co.uk\/drive\/advice\/winter-driving\/safe-driving-in-fog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dazzle other road users<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The survey also highlights confusion surrounding\u00a0<span class=\"il\">vehicle<\/span>\u00a0controls. Over one in five (22%) drivers admit they don\u2019t know where their fog light switches are, and while most<a href=\"https:\/\/autoscommunity.com\/2025\/01\/09\/drivers-urged-to-beware-of-five-minute-payment-rule\/\"> drivers<\/a> (80%) correctly understand these lights must be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carwow.co.uk\/guides\/glossary\/what-are-fog-lights#gref\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">switched on manually<\/a>, 13% are under the impression they are automatic or simply don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<h5 dir=\"ltr\">How Confusion Impacts Safety on the Road<\/h5>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This confusion has real-world consequences. Over a quarter of drivers (29%) admit they have driven in foggy conditions without turning on their fog lights. The main reasons cited were a belief that visibility wasn\u2019t poor enough (52%), followed by 40% who mistakenly thought their standard headlights were sufficient. Concerningly, 21% didn\u2019t use them simply because they couldn\u2019t locate the switch[3].<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Beyond usage, basic maintenance is also being overlooked. More than one in five drivers (21%) have never checked whether their fog lights are working, and over a quarter (26%) check them only rarely.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Claire Wills-McKissick,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tempcover.com\/temporary-car-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.tempcover.com\/temporary-car-insurance&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1772527080995000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1xzmN0yYsu_vGmHuK-9B9P\">temporary\u00a0<span class=\"il\">car<\/span>\u00a0insurance<\/a>\u00a0expert at Tempcover, adds:\u00a0\u201cOur research shows a worrying disconnect between drivers and their\u00a0<span class=\"il\">vehicles<\/span>\u00a0when driving in fog.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;We urge motorists to locate their fog light switch before setting off, by looking for the lamp icon with a wavy line intersected by three beams.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>&#8220;The Highway Code states fog lights should only be used when visibility drops below 100 metres, which is roughly the length of a football pitch. Once visibility improves, you must turn them off to avoid dazzling others or risking a fine.
