This announcement comes\u00a0after\u00a0the IIHS\u00a0strengthened the requirements for its\u00a0<em>TOP SAFETY PICK<\/em>\u00a0(TSP) and\u00a0<em>TOP SAFETY PICK<\/em>+ (TSP+) awards.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new, stricter criteria demand <span style=\"color: #808080;\">better<\/span> side crash protection, improved pedestrian crash prevention systems, and the elimination of subpar headlights from the field of qualifying vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>As part of <a href=\"https:\/\/autoscommunity.com\/2022\/12\/08\/new-volvo-cars-tech-hub-in-downtown-stockholm-opens-its-doors\/\">Volvo Car<\/a>&#8216;s vision that no one should be seriously injured or killed in a new <a href=\"https:\/\/autoscommunity.com\/2023\/01\/16\/volvo-cars-reports-full-year-2022-sales-share-of-fully-electric-cars-at-10-9\/\">Volvo car<\/a>, the company has put safety at the centre of everything it does.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>&#8220;The Volvo XC90 continues to prove, year after year, that it is among the <a href=\"https:\/\/autoscommunity.com\/2022\/12\/13\/volvo-xc40-achieves-highest-possible-safety-rating-in-updated-iihs-test\/\">safest vehicles<\/a> on the road today,&#8221; said \u00c5sa Haglund, head of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volvocars.com\/en-ae\/v\/safety\/research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Volvo Cars Safety Centre<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The most significant change to the criteria is replacing the original IIHS side crash test. The updated test involves 82 per cent more energy and requires vehicles to earn an acceptable or good rating to qualify for TSP, while a good rating is necessary for the TSP+.<\/p>\n<p>Both mild hybrid (XC90) and plug-in hybrid (<a href=\"https:\/\/autoscommunity.com\/2022\/05\/18\/volvo-xc90-recharge-honored-for-the-second-consecutive-year-as-one-of-the-best-family-cars-by-parents\/\">XC90 Recharge<\/a>) versions of the XC90 earned a TSP+ award.
