Safety beyond legal demands. With internal requirements based on accident statistics and profound studies, Scania\u2019s engineers prepare crash tests to improve security. This time, an installation with 80-litre tanks for compressed natural gas was the one withstanding a heavy side impact.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our R&D Expert Engineer responsible for crash and safety<\/a> tests, Dan Loft\u00e9n, knows all about these tests. After months of preparations, it was time. \u201cWe positioned the heavily loaded trailer tractor across the test track. Then we used a steel cable to pull the deformable barrier, representing a passenger car, straight into the side-mounted gas tank installation, simulating a side-collision,\u201d he says.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The crash test is thoroughly assessed afterwards, the vehicle<\/a> is inspected, and the engineers dismount the parts they find interesting. \u201cAnd then the analysis. We use data from measurements during the test and also look at the high-speed videos to have a detailed view of the event.\u201d The material can also be used for simulations and to develop simplified test methods, as the tests done with an actual vehicle<\/a> are expensive.<\/p>\n

So, had the gas tanks been damaged? No. Loft\u00e9n can rest assured that in case of an actual accident<\/a>, the level of safety is high.<\/p>\n
