New Study Shows UK Driving Test Pass Rates Differ by Region

4,281

New research reveals the UK’s average driving test pass rate is just 48.7%, but the location where you take your test could almost double your chances of passing.

The learner driver insurance experts at Tempcover analysed the latest DVSA data to uncover where in the UK it is easiest and hardest to pass your practical driving test, revealing significant regional differences.

Key Findings
  • In 24/25, among locations with 1,000 or more test-takers, Dorchester had the highest pass rate at 66.7%, followed by Kendal (64.8%) and Chichester (64.2%).

  • Wolverhampton (33.4%), Featherstone (34.1%), and Wednesbury (36.4%) recorded the lowest pass rates nationally.

  • The research also found that 17-year-olds had the highest pass rate at 61%, followed by 18-year-olds (53%).

  • Learner drivers aged 56 struggled the most, recording the highest fail rate at 66%, while 64% of those aged 60 and over also failed.
