Renault Bets on the Past to Power the Future

Renault is dusting off its ’90s greatest hits—and giving them a lithium-ion makeover. The move? Turn old-school cool into EV buzz. In a market flooded with lookalike electric boxes, Renault’s betting that familiar shapes with new guts will get noticed. And maybe even sell.

Laurens van den Acker, Renault’s Group Design Chief, emphasizes the importance of reintroducing these models immediately. He believes the ’90s hit that mark now. In a market flooded with lookalike EVs, Renault sees a brief but bold window to make old feel new again.

The Renault 5 Turbo 3E is a real highlight. It’s an electric version of the famous Renault 5 Turbo. With two electric motors that deliver over 500 bhp, it can go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds, which is as fast as some sports cars.

Renault isn’t just slapping old names on new tech. Design chief Gilles Vidal says calling the new five a “Turbo” isn’t about copying the past but capturing a mindset. “It’s a spirit,” he said. The badge signals punch and personality, not a throwback gimmick.

The French automaker plans a limited production run of 1,980 units for the Renault 5 Turbo 3E, honoring the original model’s launch year. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2027, offering collectors and enthusiasts a unique opportunity to own a piece of automotive history reimagined for the electric era.

Car brands dig into their past to stand out in the EV race. Renault’s move is no different—it brings back fan favorites, swaps engines for batteries, and bets that legacy can power the future.

This isn’t just a retro stunt. Renault is threading a needle—tapping into memory while betting on electric.

A market chasing the next new thing is doubling down on identity. If it works, Renault won’t just sell cars. It’ll sell the idea that the past still has a place in the future.
